PSP Custom Firmware 3.52 M33 !!

Well.. before I write any further, I want to say thanks to Dark_Alex for all his works until now before he stepped back, but well... with or without him, PSP scene must go one.

M33 Teams (from Russia) continue what Dark_Alex lefts... and they came out with CF 3.52 M33, yups all the "features" you had before can be use in this Custom Firmware PLUS extra an extra feature which is fully use of iso loader from S0NY called np9660.prx. I couldn't believe if I didn't see with own eyes ! why the hell S0NY make an iso loader on this new firmware, only God knows I can tell :P oh and by the way, if we use np9660.prx while playing iso, the battery can last longer.

The other great news is (other than 90% compatibility iso loader without UMD inside) Legend of Legaia WORKS flawlessly in PSP, and im guessing other PSX games are also have increasing in compatibility. So many improvement... it's just like prizes for my second birthday LOL

Salute to M33 Team and Good Bye to Dark_Alex

Brave Story: The New Traveler

Finally after long waited, there's a good quality RPG in PSP, Brave Story: The New Traveler

Brave Story follows the story of a young boy named Tatsuya whose good friend Miki has fallen ill due to an unknown force. Tatsuya is offered the chance to travel to the world of Vision, whereupon he becomes a Traveler, searching for five gems used to summon the goddess of destiny and save his stricken friend. During his travels, Tatsuya will run into a great deal of fantasy stand-bys: cat-people, known as Kitkin, lizardmen known as Waterkin, gnome-like people, and just about anything else you would figure belonged in a fantasy world. His friends, culled not only from the Human-like Ankha, but from the other races as well, fit well in the fairly stereotypical roles provided them: the adult Waterkin, Sogreth, who finds himself escorting the ragtag band of heroes, Yuno, the young, headstrong kitkin who becomes Tatsuya's first ally, and several other allies are all very charming. The dialogue flows well, is humorous at many times, and most gamers who aren't stony-faced will crack smiles at some of the story. Those who have seen the Japanese animated movie or read the novel will be interested to know that the story is a parallel to Wataru's, but instead follows a new set of characters. For what it is, Brave Story: New Traveler has a very charming story.

Any RPG-loving PSP owner should check it out because as it stands, Brave Story is, without a single doubt, the best original RPG for the widescreen handheld

Custom Firmware 3.30 OE-A released

Well, another achievement in PSP scene, Custom Firmware reached 3.30 OE-A version, if this is your first time read about CF (Custom Firmware), then let me explain, CF is a firmware made by Dark_Alex which imitated the real firmware from S0NY, but maintain the ability to play PSP backup games, now a days they called it ISO Games. Other than that CF can also play Homebrews (games made out of S0NY)

And in this newest CF, once again Dark_Alex managed to hack the newest firmare from S0NY which is 3.30, hacked and ready to use :D and of course you can play your backup PS1 games in PSP with this CF, amazing huh?! :)

Files needed to install 3.30 OE-A

Updated to 3.10 OE-A !!

I just update my PSP to 3.10 OE-A, thanks to Dark_Alex :) you're truly awesome !

3.10 OE-A changes:

  • Change from 3.03 firmware to 3.10
  • 4th level of brightness (aka battery eater) can now be selected also without ac adaptor.
  • Changes in hen core:
    - Static user elf’s can now be executed in the 3.10 kernel. (this includes snes user version between other programs)
    - Tyranid’s patch (added in 3.03 OE-C) consequences was not explained very well in the changelog of 3.03 OE-C:
    • For programmers: it allows kernel modules to have user imports, making kernel programming in 3.03/3.10 less strict.
    • For users: plugins and applications that worked in 2.71 SE, but not in OE, *may* now work in 3.03OE-C and 3.10 OE-A

3.10 Update System

  • Dynamic Normalizer has been added as a feature under Sound Settings
  • Better compatibility POPS
  • New setting menu when playing PSX games
    • Now can assign for controller 2
    • Adjust brightness
    • Adjust volume control (louder)
    • Add Zoom function in screen setting (to remove black border)

303 OE-A released, support psxpsp compression

Another achievement from Dark_Alex, he came out with 3.03 OE-A. .:

Changes from 3.02 OE-B to 3.03 OE-A:
* Change from firmware 3.02 to 3.03
* Added support for compression in psx isos (look at popstation documentation for more details).
* Added support for decrypted document.dat (psx games manual) (look at docmaker documentation for more details).
* Fixed a bug regarding free region: a stupid bug caused it not to work at all. Now it should work, although it has not been tested due to lack of umd’s of different regions between the testers and me.
* Some generic bug fixes in the code.
* Re-added the sdk.
* Fixed some bugs that could cause the brick of korean/chinese/taiwan/singapure psp when restoring default settings. To prevent this, the region of those psp’s are faked to japanese when fake region is disabled. For same reason, korean region is removed from fake region.
* Added australia/new zeland and russia to the regions to be faked.

Playing Crash Bandicoot from PS1 in PSP

OK... thanks to "Custom Firmware 3.02 OE-A" :> I finally can played PS1 games in PSP without having the PS3 (well even though S0NY already mention that you DON'T need PS3 for playing PS1 games in PSP, but still...) >:-[

So enough talking, the video proved it all

sorry the video a bit shaggy, 'cause holding camera and shoot while playing the PSP was difficult :P

Obviously the screen resolution in PS1 is smaller than PSP, thats why S0NY provide "Screen Mode" where you can choose from Original, Normal or Full Screen (I suggested to choose Normal) and you can also "Assign Button" , view "Software Manual" and of course "Quit Game" when you pressed HOME button

Just one think I'm hoping from S0NY... provide MORE good quality GAMES !!! Final Fantasy VII, Xenogears, Wild Arms maybe? :)

PS1P Alpha 1 Released - Playstation One Emulator for PSP

After the disapointing PS1 Emulator release by Sony which requires you to have a PS3 heres some better news.

Finally is the release time of PS1P the PlayStation Emulator for the PSP - An Exclusive for the PSP News site at DCEmu. Its been a long wait but our friend Anonymous Coder has now agreed to release the first Alpha of his Playstation Emulator for the PSP.

This release was to be a Single Game release but AC contacted me today and changed his mind so thats great for you all, heres what he emailed me:

The wait is worth it. I'm releasing a version that will run anything. ISO, BIN, Z and ZNX.

The rest you know. scph1001.bin and images in the __SCE__ps1p directory.

This version has some compatibility problems which I plan to fix soon, for example the FF7 intro movie doesn't run. You can play the game though, just get past the intro using a standard PC emulator (PCSX, ePSXe, ...) and copy over the memory card file ( mcd001.mcr or mcd002.mcr).

Use L+R+ up/down to tweak the CPU timing.
I think L2 and R2 aren't working at the moment too.

--A.C.

P.S.: to make things clear. This emulator has nothing to do with PCSX, psx4all or any other emulator already released. The only thing I did was use for the game selection screen, the same font code that psx4all uses--it's from some GP2X demo/app.

PSP 3.0+ Firmware Released

Sony has posted the PSP 3.00 firmware manual on their site. There are indeed a few great features, 2 of which are quite tempting (for me... I still want to play homebrews, so you know what's my opinion :>>)

Update :: Nov 22 - Well that wasn’t long; Sony has quickly released FW 3.01, nothing new — just a security patch. (Maybe Sony realized some "holes" in security, then they quickly update it :))

Update :: Nov 23 - Firmware 3.00 and 3.01 decrypted. (Yesterday 22 Nov)

Remote Play
Remote play is a new feature in Firmware 3.00 that allows you to remotely control your PlayStation 3 from your PSP. This also includes the display of PS3 content on the PSP. “You can display a PLAYSTATION®3 system screen on a PSP™ system and play content that is on the PS3™ system. To use this feature, you must adjust the necessary settings on the PSP™ system and the PS3™ system.” Using this new mode of playback, one can control the Photo, Music, Video, and Internet Browser features of the PlayStation 3 from a remote location via their Playstation Portable.

Video Compatibility
In this updated version of the Playstation Portable firmware, you are also able to play a few new video formats. The Motion JPEG format (M-JPEG), is an “informal name for multimedia formats where each video frame or interlaced field of a digital video sequence is separately compressed as a JPEG image” (Wikipedia). The PlayStation Portable plays both the Linear PCM and the μ-Law versions of the Motion JPEG video format. In addition, you will now be able to access the Camera (functionality) from the photo option menus, for quicker easier access when taking photos or video. Another nifty function is the ability to finally turn off Auto Play for inserted UMD Discs via UMD Auto Boot. (Thanks zerojay)

PlayStation Games
Here’s the big tip you’ve been waiting for. Finally, Sony is going to drop their highly anticipated PlayStation One emulator onto the PSP. From the manual however, there seems to be a unavoidable catch. If you don’t have a PS3, your not going to be enjoying PlayStation One games emulating on Sony’s PlayStation One emulator for PSP anytime soon. From the manual it states that you must connect to the Playstation Online store with your PSP connected to the PlayStation 3 in order to download and play the games. In addition, they mention that you can in fact share the games, but you must activate the other system in the Friends menu as a PS3 Network Account.

Officially 2.71-SE-B"

After thinking a few minutes :)) i finally decided to upgrade my PSP firmware into 2.71 SE !!! maybe you ask me why I'm so crazy upgrading my PSP firmware into 2.71? but remember, this is NOT a 2.71 BUT 2.71 SE which mean, there something "Unusual"

First think first, this upgrading is so dangerous, because we must write into the flash and there's high possibility will brick the PSP

BUT !!! after you successfully upgrade your PSP into 2.71 SE-B", there's a lot good things you can get, such as

1. You no need load Devhook or changes you PSP into 2.71 when you want play ISO, because all the ISO games name are listed in the game list (where you usually load your homebrews games)
2. You have all the good features from 2.71 like internet browser, RSS, Locations Free Player, as well as the ability to playback backup games and homebrews

so... what you waiting for? UPGRADE your firmware to 2.71 SE-B" !!! but before you do that!! TAKE A NOTES !! there's some requirement before you upgrade!

PlayStation Portable

PSP™ sort of PlayStation® Portable made by SONY, the first portable system from SONY and in my opinion this is trully great portable system, except for playing PSP™ games, this system can handle video, listening to music, browsing internet, Location Free Player, RSS reader, and the most interesting is the capabilities to read homebrew (homebrew is a program made by people *out of SONY*) but unfortunetly SONY did'nt allowed their system to read homebrew, this is one of the reasons why SONY keep updating PSP™ firmware, but you know, all the hacker and programmer out there never stop to working and pawn SONY. last year only 1.0 and 1.5 firmware can read homebrew, but now a days, even 2.71 firmware also can read homebrew but not as perfect as 1.5 firmware.

For people who know about games very well, they all never update their firmware larger than 1.5 (when I write this post, PSP™ already reached firmware 2.81) this is the other reason why SONY keep updating their firmware (beside unallowed homebrew) is to tightening their security problem inside PSP™, concerning about backup games (called ISO) actually ISO playback is not bad at all, for me, I play ISO because I want to safe my PSP™ optic lens, so with the backup game (which i owned the games) I put the ISO files into my MemoryStick™ and playback into my PSP™ (we can cut the loading time more than a half) but unfortunetly alot people just download the ISO games from internet / bitorrent (only 1.5 firmware allowed ISO loaded) thats why people avoid to update their firmware. eventhough someone have a firmware higher than 1.5, there's a lot downgrader maded by peoples... some work, some not and some bricked their PSP™, so.. be wised before deciding to do something.

For me, I still have 1.5 as my firmware because I want to play Homebrew, like SNES emulator, GameBoy Advance emulator, PlayStation emulator (which not perfect yet), PSP Radio (listening radio via internet with shoutcast), streaming all files your computer into your PSP™, File explorer, MSN/Yahoo/AIM messenger and a lot more, And lately i realized that I play homebrew games more often than PSP™ games :P but still the PSP™ quality is the best comparing with homebrew.. but you see... imagine in this next generation gaming, you can still play Mario game in your PSP :P so memorable :P

OK thats all about the background of PSP™ :) so now you know and can decide why 1.5 firmware is powerfull and why SONY keep updating their firmware... Oh... i forgot i play ISO also, but i own the UMD™ ;)

PSP CPU (System clock frequency 1~333MHz)
32MB Main Memory
4MD Embedded DRAM
UMD™ Drive (Playback only)
Wi-Fi
USB 2.0
Memory Stick PRO Duo
